The Irish
Language Foundation, Inc. (ILF) is a tax exempt, non-profit organization
dedicated to supporting the preservation, learning and use of the Irish
language.
Before the
Famine, Irish was the native tongue of over 6 million people. If you have
ancestors who emigrated from Ireland in the 19th century, Irish was most
likely their mother tongue. Since that time the number of native speakers
has been dramatically reduced through famine, emigration, and coercive
socio-economic and political forces.
There are
an estimated 100,000 native Irish speakers in Ireland today. Lack of economic
opportunity has forced generation after generation of Irish speakers to
move to English speaking regions of Ireland or to emigrate overseas. The
ILF needs your help to preserve this priceless cultural treasure by fostering
economic opportunity in the Irish speaking regions of Ireland and by increasing
the use of Irish elsewhere. The ILF will achieve these goals through support
of economic development schemes in Ireland and promoting the learning
and use of Irish in Ireland, in the United States, and around the world.
Irish has
been spoken in Ireland for over five thousand years, your donation to
the ILF can help ensure that it endures an other five thousand! Thank
you for your generous support.
